That growth has made 0DTE one of the most searched, most debated, and most misunderstood corners of retail trading. What Is a 0DTE Option?
"0DTE" is shorthand for zero days to expiration - an options contract, call or put, that expires on the same calendar day it is traded. There is no overnight holding period. Gamma measures how fast an option's delta (its sensitivity to the underlying stock's price) changes as the stock moves. Every option has gamma, but 0DTE gamma is extreme, for a simple reason: with hours left instead of weeks, a contract's delta can swing from near-zero to near-one (or the reverse) on a move of just a percent or two in the underlying. There is no time cushion left to smooth that transition out.
Here's why that matters beyond the option buyer's own position.
