US Stock Market Hours

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ follow the same trading schedule:

SessionHours (Eastern Time)
Pre-market4:00 AM – 9:30 AM ET
Regular trading9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET
After-hours4:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET

Regular trading runs Monday through Friday, 6.5 hours per day. The market is closed on weekends and designated holidays.

Pre-market and after-hours sessions are available through most brokers, but with reduced liquidity, wider spreads, and limit orders only.

2026 Stock Market Holiday Calendar

The NYSE and NASDAQ are fully closed on these 10 days in 2026:

DateDayHoliday
January 1ThursdayNew Year's Day
January 19MondayMartin Luther King Jr. Day
February 16MondayPresidents' Day
April 3FridayGood Friday
May 25MondayMemorial Day
June 19FridayJuneteenth
July 3FridayIndependence Day (observed)
September 7MondayLabor Day
November 26ThursdayThanksgiving Day
December 25FridayChristmas Day

Note: Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4 — the market closes the day before on Friday, July 3.

Early Close Days in 2026

On these 3 days, the stock market opens at the normal 9:30 AM ET but closes at 1:00 PM ET — three hours early:

DateDayReason
July 2ThursdayDay before Independence Day (observed)
November 27FridayDay after Thanksgiving (Black Friday)
December 24ThursdayChristmas Eve

Early close days tend to have 40–60% lower trading volume than normal sessions. Spreads are wider and liquidity is thinner, especially in the final hour.

Set a market close alert for early close days so you don't miss the 1:00 PM cutoff. Stock Alarm Pro can notify you before the early close with a push notification, email, or phone call.

Holidays the Market Stays OPEN (Common Confusion)

These days catch people off guard — banks are closed, but the stock market is open as normal:

DateHolidayStock MarketBond MarketBanks
October 12Columbus DayOpenClosedClosed
November 11Veterans DayOpenClosedClosed

This is one of the most frequently Googled stock market questions. Remember: the stock market follows the NYSE holiday calendar, not the federal bank holiday calendar. Columbus Day and Veterans Day are regular trading days.

Pre-Market and After-Hours Trading by Broker

Not all brokers offer the same extended hours access:

Never Miss the Opening Bell

If you're the type of trader who Googles "is the stock market open today" before every session, there's a simpler solution: set a market open alert.

Stock Alarm Pro's market open and market close alerts are the app's most popular feature. Here's what they do:

  • Market open alert — sends a push notification, email, or phone call at 9:30 AM ET every trading day
  • Market close alert — notifies you before the 4:00 PM ET close (or 1:00 PM on early close days)
  • Custom timing — set alerts for pre-market, after-hours, or any time window you care about
  • Phone call delivery — your phone rings even when it's on silent mode, so you never sleep through a market open

Instead of checking Google every morning, let the alert come to you.
