Net percentage of domestic banks tightening standards for commercial and industrial loans to large and middle-market firms (Fed Senior Loan Officer Survey). When positive, more banks are tightening than loosening — a direct constraint on business investment and growth. This is one of the most reliable recession leading indicators: it turned sharply positive before every US recession since 1990, typically 2-4 quarters ahead of the NBER determination.
