Coal remains the source of approximately 40% of global electricity generation — a share that has barely declined despite the renewables buildout. Australian coal is the global benchmark export price. The 2022 spike above $400/ton following Russia's invasion of Ukraine — Europe scrambling to replace Russian gas — was the highest coal price in history by a wide margin.
