IMF Primary Commodity Prices: Food Index (2016=100). An aggregate of global food commodity prices including cereals, vegetable oils, meat, seafood, sugar, and tropical beverages. The 2007-08 food crisis (index doubling in 18 months) contributed to political instability in 30+ countries. The 2021-22 surge — combining post-COVID supply shocks and the Ukraine war disrupting grain exports — pushed the index to its highest level since 1974.
