Bollinger Band Squeeze Alerts
A Bollinger Band squeeze signals that a stock's volatility has contracted to historically low levels — a setup that often precedes major moves. Markets alternate between expansion and contraction. Low volatility precedes high volatility.

How Bollinger Band Squeeze Alerts Work
Bollinger Bands consist of a 20-day moving average with upper and lower bands set 2 standard deviations above and below. When the bands narrow (squeeze), it means recent price action has been unusually compressed — a low-volatility consolidation.
Squeezes are significant because volatility is mean-reverting: periods of low volatility are followed by periods of high volatility. The squeeze doesn't predict direction — but it does signal that a big move is loading. Combine the squeeze alert with directional analysis (trend, sector momentum, catalyst timing) to position before the expansion.
Stock Alarm Pro detects Bollinger Band squeezes by measuring bandwidth (upper band minus lower band relative to the middle band). When bandwidth reaches a 6-month or 1-year low, a squeeze alert fires. Use it alongside ADX (confirming direction of the breakout) and volume.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does a Bollinger Band squeeze typically last?
- Squeezes on daily charts typically last 2–8 weeks before resolving. Longer squeezes (2+ months) often precede larger breakouts. Weekly chart squeezes can last months and precede multi-month trend changes.
- Does the squeeze tell me which direction the breakout will be?
- No — the squeeze only signals that a breakout is coming. To determine direction, look at the broader trend (above or below 200-day MA), sector strength, and whether volume is building on up days or down days during the consolidation.
- What is Bollinger Band bandwidth?
- Bandwidth measures how wide the Bollinger Bands are relative to the moving average: (Upper Band - Lower Band) / Middle Band. Lower bandwidth = more compressed = greater squeeze. A bandwidth reaching 52-week lows is a strong squeeze signal.
- Can I set alerts for Bollinger Band breakouts (price crossing the band)?
- Yes. Stock Alarm Pro supports alerts for price crossing above the upper Bollinger Band (bullish breakout) or below the lower band (bearish breakdown), in addition to squeeze detection alerts.
