The record book, rewritten in 19 months
The SaaS era had a well-worn scoreboard. Salesforce, the benchmark everyone chased, took about 10 years to reach $1 billion in revenue and 19 years to reach $31 billion in ARR. That was considered the gold standard of B2B growth for two decades.
Here is what the AI era has done to that scoreboard, using only reported, dated figures:
| Company | What it sells | Latest print | The ramp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Claude models, API, Claude Code | $65B annualized run rate (end of July 2026) | ~$1B Dec 2024, $9B end of 2025, $47B May 2026, $65B July 2026 |
| OpenAI | ChatGPT, API | $40B+ annualized run rate (August 2026) | $10B June 2025, $20B end of 2025, $25B+ March 2026, $40B+ mid-2026 |
| Cursor (Anysphere) | AI code editor | ~$4B ARR (June 2026) | $100M Jan 2025, $1B Nov 2025, $2B Feb 2026, $4B in ~31 months from launch |
| Lovable | AI app builder | $500M annualized (June 2026) | $1M to $100M ARR in 8 months, the fastest ever recorded for that leg |
| xAI (now inside SPCX) | Grok models, AI infrastructure | $2.561B of Q2 2026 segment revenue | The only line on this table from an audited SEC filing |
Every number above is a company statement or a filing, with the date attached. None of the private ones are GAAP. Hold that thought, because it matters later.
The headline is simple: Anthropic covered in roughly 19 months (end of 2024 to July 2026) a revenue distance that took the best SaaS company in history 19 years. Cursor became, by most accounts, the fastest B2B software company ever to $1 billion, then did it three more times, then agreed to be acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion in an all-stock deal signed June 16, 2026 and expected to close in Q3.

Why this speed is possible now
Growth this fast is not a marketing story. It is five structural changes landing at once.
1. Distribution was already built. A SaaS company in 2010 had to hire a sales force, build a partner channel, and educate a market. An AI company in 2025 ships a URL and an API key. ChatGPT did the category education for everyone; every AI product launched after it inherited a market that already believed. Cursor reached $1 billion in ARR with a product developers installed themselves, one download at a time.
2. They price against payroll, not IT budgets. Classic SaaS competed for the software line of a corporate budget. AI tools compete for the labor line, which is an order of magnitude larger in almost every company. A coding agent priced per seat or per token is being compared to engineer-hours, a legal AI to associate-hours, a support agent to headcount. When the comparison set changes from "other software" to "salaries," willingness to pay changes with it.
3. The product improves without shipping. When Anthropic or OpenAI releases a better model, every product built on it gets better overnight, with no feature work by the customer-facing company. That shows up as expansion revenue: the same seat becomes more valuable, usage grows, tiers upgrade. Old SaaS had to earn every point of net revenue retention with roadmap. AI companies get a compounding tailwind from the model curve itself.
4. There is no integration tax. Enterprise software adoption used to mean months of implementation before value. A chat interface or an editor replaces nothing on day one; it sits beside the existing workflow and wins usage bottom-up. Enterprise contracts then follow the usage instead of preceding it. That inverts the old sales cycle and removes the single biggest drag on early revenue.
5. Capital stopped being the constraint. Amazon's Q2 2026 10-Q discloses Anthropic exposure of $8 billion in notes plus $10 billion of preferred bought in the quarter, an OpenAI Series C position carried at $28.7 billion, and cloud commitments of more than $100 billion with each of them. Lovable raised $400 million at a $13.3 billion valuation in August 2026 on $500 million of annualized revenue. Companies at this stage historically rationed growth against cash. These do not.
Add usage-based pricing on top, which compounds all five inside every existing account, and the old SaaS speed limits (magic numbers, T2D3, the years-to-a-billion tables) simply stop describing reality.
The catch: run rate is not revenue
Now the discipline part, because this is a market-analysis blog and not a hype feed.
An annualized run rate is one good month multiplied by 12. It is self-reported, unaudited, and it counts committed and consumption revenue in whatever way the company chooses. Anthropic's $65 billion and OpenAI's $40 billion are real disclosures reported by real outlets, but no auditor has signed them.
The public markets have exactly one audited AI income statement, and it is instructive. SPCX's Q2 2026 filings print the AI segment plainly: $2.561 billion of revenue, a $1.257 billion operating loss, and $15.828 billion of AI capital expenditure in a single quarter. That is what hypergrowth actually costs when the accountants are involved. Inference is not free, and the gross-margin math that made SaaS compounders beloved does not transfer cleanly.
There is a second audited shadow worth knowing: Microsoft's fiscal 2026 10-K recorded $24.1 billion of revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI. One company's fastest-ever growth is another company's revenue line and a third company's cost of compute. The whole system is visible in the filings if you know where the money crosses.
And the speed cuts both ways. A market where a startup can reach $4 billion of ARR in 31 months is a market where a competitor can take that revenue on a similar clock. Switching costs on a model API or a code editor are low. The same forces on this page are the bear case for every name on this page.
How to get exposure from the public markets
You cannot buy Anthropic or OpenAI stock today. Both were described in August 2026 reporting, by Bloomberg among others, as pre-IPO. Here is where the growth on this page actually lands in tickers you can watch:
SPCX is the direct route. It is the only public company with a standalone AI segment P&L, it absorbed xAI in February 2026, and the $60 billion Cursor acquisition, the fastest-growing B2B software company in history, is expected to close in Q3 2026. The Item 2.01 8-K confirming that close is a concrete, datable catalyst. We covered the segment math in SPCX after Q2.
MSFT, AMZN, GOOGL are the funding and hosting layer. Microsoft books OpenAI-arrangement revenue directly. Amazon holds OpenAI equity and Anthropic notes and preferred, with $100B+ cloud commitments from each. Alphabet's cloud backlog stood at $519.5 billion in its Q2 10-Q. When the private run rates grow, these cloud lines are where the audited version shows up, one quarter later.
NVDA, AVGO, AMD are the toll collectors. Every ramp in the table above is trained and served on their silicon. NVIDIA's Data Center line was $75.2 billion in the April 2026 quarter. The full spender-and-collector ledger is in our AI capex scorecard, and the Stock Alarm ecosystem map shows who sits upstream and downstream of each name.
What to watch from here
Four things, each observable, each alertable:
- The IPO filings. OpenAI and Anthropic S-1s would turn the two largest unaudited run rates in history into audited numbers. The gap between the press figure and the GAAP figure will be the most-read footnote of the decade.
- The Cursor close. An Item 2.01 8-K from SPCX in Q3 2026 puts the fastest SaaS curve ever inside a public income statement. Silence past Q3 is also information.
- Cloud deceleration. Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud growth is the audited proxy for private AI demand. If the private run rates keep doubling while the cloud lines flatten, one of those two stories is wrong.
- The loss ratio. SPCX's AI segment is the live experiment in whether hypergrowth AI revenue can converge toward profit. Watch revenue against operating loss each quarter, not revenue alone.
The practical layer: put price and volume alerts on SPCX, MSFT, AMZN, GOOGL, and NVDA, and let the Portfolio Agent flag the filings and analyst moves on your names so you are not refreshing a news feed. Stock Alarm Pro is $20/month or $168/year.
The thesis, restated: AI companies grow faster than any software companies ever have because distribution, budget, product improvement, adoption friction, and capital all flipped in their favor at once. The run rates are real disclosures but not audited revenue. Until the S-1s land, the filings of SPCX, the hyperscalers, and the chipmakers are the only place this growth is provable, and they are watchable today.
